Dave comes from a humble background where his father, who was a County Agricultural Extension Agent, and mother, a clerk in grocery store, who later earned a diploma as a licensed practical nurse lived a simple life in Canton, Ohio along with his three sisters. Dave’s life changed dramatically, however, when he graduated from Ohio State with a BA in Economics. It was during the Viet Nam war; however, he was also commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force in the Medical Service Corps. Not only did the military experience instill integrity, leadership and discipline into his life, but he found a career as a health care executive. After serving more than four years on active duty, including a tour in Viet Nam, he returned to graduate school at Ohio State to earn a Master’s degree in Hospital and Healthcare Administration. This led to long and exciting career of more than 40 years.
Dave found a niche in planning and finance for both hospitals and physician practices. His healthcare career led him throughout the US, including projects and work in 18 states, as well as residency in nine. His travels also included more than 30 countries. Dave moved to Lansing in 2007 from Pennsylvania to join Sparrow Health Systems as Chief Financial Officer for the medical group.
When Dave decided that he wanted an encore career, he found that many of his skills readily transferred to personal financial strategies and he earned a certification as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional in 1993, more than 23 years ago. He also found that his education, experience and training were useful as a college instructor. After he left the healthcare organizations, he began to teach in college and discovered a passion for teaching. He taught business, finance and health care finance courses at two local colleges, Davenport University and Career Quest. He also has been a frequent speaker on various topics in healthcare and finance. He thrives on the challenge of simplifying complex topics for clients and translating them so that the implications are clear.
Because of his dedication to give something back to the military service, he joined Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) as a life member and has served as a personal financial counselor to active duty and military reservists in the Mid-Michigan region.
Dave also earned a MBA in Finance from DePaul University. In addition to CFP® certificate, he also holds a license as an Accredited Asset Management Specialist ™ and Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor ™. He holds insurance licenses as well as series 7 and 63 securities registrations. He holds the distinction as a Fellow in both the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).
Dave has three children, two daughters, who recently graduated from college and a son, who is a junior. His wife, Terri, a boomer, reinvented herself to meet the new demands of the job market when she re-entered college to complete a degree IT Project Management to complement her MBA and BS in Zoology. She now serves as a Business Analyst for the State of Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources. He exercises regularly and follows professional and college sports.
